Hi, Hope the AllTheLines challenge is going well. I have a question for when you have time. Has the SRT cancellation policy changed in the last few weeks? I use the dticket website quite a bit so I am familiar with it. I cancelled a ticket in mid-February with the usual fee (20/30%?) with no problem. I am trying to cancel via dticket today another ticket for 4 April (booked via dticket on 11 Feb). The 1690 hotline say the cancellation fee is now 70% and applies to all bookings made after 19 Feb. I can't find any info on the website about this. Even though my booking was made before 19 Feb (and there was no info about this fee change when I booked) they say I have to go to Hua Lamphong and make a written "petition" to ask for the old cancellation fee to apply...with no guarantee it will.

Yes they made an announcement on their social media in Thai about this last month. But I haven't seen any updates on their website.

I am leaving from KTW to Nong Kai, and want to park my car at the train station. How do I use the long term parking for a week, at KTW?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
The cost is 300 baht per 24 hour. Though I believe there is a promotion at the moment if you show a train ticket. I haven't done it myself yet and so I don't know the full details.

Hi Richard. We‘re planning to go fom Bkk to Chumphon by nr 43 Southern line. Departure time 7.30.
As I read in your blog, it should be possible to buy a ticket 30 days in advance. I couldn‘t find out how? Can you hel us? Dticket online didn‘t work…
Thank you.
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
If D-Ticket doesn't work for you, then you have no choice but to use an agency such as 12Go.

I've plan travel to Bangkok from hanyai (return) on early Feb 2024..
1)what #no of train should I take from Bangkok - Hatnyai?
2) can we request seat no for lower seat? And can u suggest me what the best seat no near the train facility.

Tq 🙂

Special Express No. 31 (Bangkok To Hat Yai Junction) is the most popular sleeper on that route. Each carriage has toilets/washbasins at one end and so not really a problem. Best not to be near each end as the door will opening and closing all night. I usually get a lower berth in the middle.

Dear Richard
After visiting Laos we want by train from Nong Khai or Udon Thani to Pak Chong for visiting Khao Yai N P
I was looking at the northeastern line but could not find a train
Can you help me?
Thank you
Willem
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Pak Chong is on a different line. You would need to go to Nakhon Ratchasima first and change there. Or in Kaeng Khoi.

Hallo.

Ordinary No. 275 leaves Hua Lamphong at 5:55am and Ordinary No. 279 leaves at 1:05pm.

Hi Richard, I'm also thinking of going to Hua Hin from Bangkok by train. Do I need to buy the tickets online or it is available at the station on the day itself? At Hualumphong or the new station?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
This depends on how quickly you want to go there and with what comfort. Tickets for Special Express No. 43 are sold in advance and the trains go from Krung Thep Aphiwat. Slower trains with fans go from Bangkok and Thonburi stations and you can only buy tickets on the day. The timetables are about to change and I will be publishing a page for this route very soon.

Hi Richard ! Friends told me to have a look at your blog to get my answers 😀

I will travel from Bangkok to Pran Buri, and I was wondering on which side of the train I should book my seat in order to have the best view ^^

Thank you !
William

Good question. I have been on that line already but I haven't noted if there was a best side. Anyway, I usually go for the right.

Hi Richard, many thanks for your information. I am planning to buy sleeper train tickets from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Chiang Mai on the 18th December. I am trying to login on the official site (d-ticket) it says I'm registered but won't let me login as I need to confirm my email but they never send a confirmation email, is there a way around this? I know I can try and book via the agencies but I want to try for a first class berth and it seems they sell out very quickly. is it me or are the tickets, even for second-class, becoming more difficult to get? eg I've had a look for different dates and looking today for the 9th dec, most of the second class berths are sold out for train 9 already. many thanks
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
I am not sure how about your registration problem. It is not the best of websites for people living abroad. As you have guessed, the 1st Class cabins on the Bangkok to Chiang Mai sell out very quickly. Literally within seconds. I was at the station the other week and it is just as difficult, though slightly easier. My friend got a 1st class cabin but the ticket seller said the entire carriage sold out with 30 seconds.

We are now entering high season and so even 2nd Class sells out with an hour or so. In theory, 12Go might be better for you as you can reserve with them in advance and the second the tickets go on sale their agent will be at the ticket office to try and buy your ticket. But still, no guarantee.

Hi Richard, are there any loco hauled trains in & out of Thonburi? Am visiting Bangkok in November 2023 and was hoping to ride behind a few, Rob Fraser style!
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Yes, and they have a depot and workshop there too. Just be careful of the train going to Nam Tok as they will charge foreigners a flat 100 baht fare even if you are just going one or two stops.

Hi Richard,

Amazing blog, have been following your posts for a while now. I wanted to ask, do you know if Special Express DRC 40 and Train 170 had meals on board?

Thanks Richard.

Cheers,
Steven
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
At this moment in time, the special express diesel railcars don't have food included as they are between contracts for the catering company. So tickets are 80 baht cheaper. Best to bring your own though the carriage attendants will help you order food from stations that you stop at.

No.170 doesn't have a dining car, but as there are 3rd Class carriages and the doors are open all the time, food vendors will be getting on and off this train all the time. You won't go hungry.

If I want to book connecting cabins on the #10 night sleep train in 1st Class from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, do all cabins connect or is it only certain numbers that connect. If that is the case which cabin numbers connect
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
It goes like, 1 + 2, 3+ 4, 5 + 6 etc.

Hi Richard
We are planning on taking the 9 train from Bangkok to Chang Mai in December. We would like to book 1st class but cannot see anyway to do so on any of the suggested websites. It maybe that Dec is too advanced but we can only see 2nd class in any month. Can you let us know if there really is 1st class.

Thanks Caleb

You cannot buy train tickets until 30 days in advance. So, in case, you cannot buy until November.

Do the sleeper trains allow you to get on a later station than the one you booked? For example, if I have a ticket for the overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, would it work for me to get on at the first stop after Chiang Mai, which would be Lamphun. Do they allow that?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
No problem at all. I've done this several times before as I wasn't sure at time of booking which station I would get back on my train.

Q. I'm trying to book an advance ticket for the No. 45 sleeper train through 12GO from Bangkok to Padang Besar wanting to continue my journey through Malaysia, Is it important to make sure that it stops on the Malaysian side of the border or can I just walk from Pedang Besar (Songkhla) as that's the only option available on the website at the moment? thanks
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
You cannot walk from Padang Besar (Thai) station across the border to the international Padang Besar station. When you book your tickets, makes sure you choose Krung Thep Aphiwat as the origin station and Padang Besar as the destination station. don't choose Padang Besar (Thai).

We want to book for 2 persons for the train from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Hua Hin on September 18 in 2nd Class AC Seats Only, leaving at 8:10 am.
Will we get reserved seats? If so, can we choose it ourselves or will it be assigned. And can we sit together?
Hope to hear from you soon. Greetings, Kees

Yes, you can book seats on Special Express 43 up to 30 days in advance. You can reserve seat numbers. Ticket price includes a meal and drinks.

I am a Bangladeshi. I plan to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by train

I have signed up on dticket thailand official train website. But while updating personal information, there was no option to select my country (I only found Southeast Asian countries there) or enter my country's contact number in 11 digits (the website only supports 10 digits)

Will this create any problem when I try to book ticket from the website or try to make payment using my international credit card?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
It should be alright. But some people have told me that they had trouble with buying tickets from abroad which is why they use an agency site such as 12Go. Yes, you have to pay extra but they line up at the ticket office the second it opens to buy your tickets. Plus not all tickets are sold online. For example the Chiang Mai sleeper train. A certain percent is only sold at ticket offices.

Can I buy Chiang mai to Bangkok train tickets from the Bangkok Krung Theph Aphiwat station’s ticket counter or should I have to buy it from the Chiang Mai station’s ticket booking counter?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
You can buy train tickets at any station in Thailand. It doesn't have to be the one you are travelling from or going to.
