The most popular train line for foreign tourists is undoubtedly the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi province. Many go there on package tours but I know quite a few want to go there on their own by train. It is quite easy to do by catching the train at Thonburi Station in Bangkok. Tickets cost 100 baht. You cannot buy them online or in advance. Only up to two hours before departure at the station.
