Kaeng Khoi Junction (ชุมทางแก่งคอย)

Kaeng Khoi Junction (ชุมทางแก่งคอย) is a Class 1 station and major junction on Thailand’s railway network, located in Saraburi Province about 125 kilometres from Bangkok. It is the branching point for the Northeastern Line (towards Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, and Nong Khai) and the Eastern Line (towards Chachoengsao, Aranyaprathet, and Map Ta Phut). Because of its strategic position, Kaeng Khoi is one of the busiest junctions outside Bangkok, serving long-distance express and rapid trains as well as commuter and freight services. The town itself is a convenient base for reaching Saraburi’s limestone mountains, waterfalls, and temples.

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The railway reached Kaeng Khoi in the 1890s, during the early expansion of Thailand’s network under King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). As the lines were extended northeast towards Korat and east towards Chachoengsao, Kaeng Khoi was designated as the junction, ensuring its long-term importance in both passenger and freight operations.

Over the years, Kaeng Khoi developed extensive marshalling yards and locomotive facilities, making it a major operations hub for the State Railway of Thailand. It remains a key point for coal and freight trains running to industrial areas in Saraburi, as well as for passenger trains heading to Isaan and the Eastern Seaboard.

Today, Kaeng Khoi Junction continues to play a central role in Thailand’s railway system, balancing long-distance, commuter, and freight traffic, while also standing as a historic landmark in the country’s rail development.
