Rapid No. 140 (Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok)

Rapid No. 140 train goes from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok in ten hours and 40 minutes. It leaves Ubon Ratchathani at 8:30 p.m. and arrives at Krung Thep Aphiwat at 7:10 a.m. the next morning. The train has 2nd Class (329 Baht) and 3rd Class (205 Baht) carriages with seats and fans. It also has two 2nd Class Day and Night sleeper carriages (629/699 Baht) with air-conditioning. There isn’t a dining car on this train. This is a cheaper alternative to Special Express No. 24 that leaves an hour and a half earlier at 7:00 p.m. However, this train reaches the outskirts of Bangkok at the unsocial hour of 4:20 a.m. and Krung Thep Aphiwat 30 minutes later.

There are some made to order shops in front of the station if you need to buy something to eat. They also have cold drinks. In the station itself there are a couple of vendors. One of the carriage attendants might sell you hot coffee for 20 Baht but there won’t be any food vendors on the train until you reach Ayutthaya in the early hours of the morning. There are two wash basins at one end of the carriage and two toilets. One with a Western style toilet and one with an Asian squat toilet. The latter also has a cold water shower if you are feeling brave. However, the free showers at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal might be better if you really need a shower.
