The former Khao Din Railway Station on the Death Railway

This is the former Khao Din Railway Station (สถานีรถไฟเขาดิน) that was built during the Second World War. It had strategic importance to the Japanese as it was close to the Mae Klong river and their military camp on the nearby Khao Din Hill.  According to historical records, prisoners of war were forced to dig a tunnel into the nearby hill to be used as a locomotive repair shop that would be safe from Allied bombers. The entrance is now completely sealed.

Khao Din Station was located near Wat Santi Khiri Sri Bomthat (Wat Khao Din) to the south of Kanchanaburi Railway Station.

The top photo (click here for full sized) shows General Sawai Saiyawarit, the Governor of the Railway who came to inspect Khao Din Station on 10th September 1960. The platform was 200 metres long with a 600 metre siding. The station was downgraded to a halt on 1st August 1974 and then completely abandoned on 15th November 1985. Today there isn’t much evidence left of this station. The following photos were taken by ชัชชัย ปิณฑรัตนวิบูลย์ and posted on his Facebook page. I will confirm this later, but I think this is the map location.
