Hello Richard, great website with so much useful information.

I was wondering if you knew if there had been any developments on linking the two airports Don Muang with Suvarnabhumi. I think I remember reading that there was a plan to connect Bang Sue with Phayathai so there would be one train that would run from Don Muang, to Bang Sue, to Makksan and on to the other airport. Have I understood that correctly? Thanks again for all your great work!
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Yes that is correct and I have noticed they have started clearing the land in places. But there have been delays. Long delays.

Hi Richard can my daughter buy a monthly subscription to the silomline (green)
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
It would be best if she applies for a Rabbit Card as she can top it up as and when she needs it. Plus you can use it elsewhere at other shops and restaurants.

hi there, happy to have found this page. first of all, we are going to be arriving in Bangkok 10th July and will be flying out of Singapore a month later. We are train lovers and would like to do a lot of "training", where possible. What is the best media for you to ask questions and to give our feedback? My main question is, travelling from south thailand to singapore, sleeping over a few days in Penang, KUL...: the first part to Butterworth is still with the Panang Besar change of trains? How much time should I plan between trains? And from KUL to SIN, 12go does not offer the train connection, which one would you recommend? thanks so much in advance, Aike

Hi, I was interested to see you were travelling from Bangkok to Phnom Penh recently. I’m trying to do the same but no tickets seem to be available on any sites for any days, I’ve tried breaking it into 2 via the border at Aranyaprathet but still no joy.
Am I missing something? Thanks for your work.
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
You can only buy the tickets to the Thai border on the day. I then took a taxi to Battambang where I bought tickets on the day to Phnom Penh.

How I get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Hua Lamphong Railwaystation Boy public transport?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
You could take the airport rail link to Makkasan Station and then change to MRT Asoke Station that goes to MRT Hua Lamphong Station.

Hello and good morning. You are the one and only Thai Train Guru. I have a question. I've booked a 1st class sleeper on Train no 9 from krung thep apiwath to Chiang Mai. Am I allowed to board the train one station later at Don Mueang?
Thank you so much in advance.
Vito
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Yes you can board at a later station.

Hi Richard. Are there some luggage storage lockers at KTW. We will need to leave 2 medium sized cases for a few hours. Many thanks Gill x
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Yes, there are two different storage lockers in the waiting area for long distance trains.

is it possible to use redline
bang sue grand station to taling chang,
and then connect to the kanchanaburi/namtok trains ?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Yes, there is both a Red Line and SRT station at Taling Chan. I haven't done a transfer there yet, but should be convenient.

Hello. Thanks for doing such a fabulous job with this guide website.
We're looking for some feedback: 1) Does train #84 from Trang to Bangkok have a baggage car and if so, do they allow bicycles to be transported? 2) What is the process and timing at the new station to pick up the bikes if they are onboard the train?
We appreciate your help with this! Thanks, Heather
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Thanks. I haven't taken my bicycle on the train like this yet. It's in my plan. Yes, No. 84 has a cargo carriage. It goes to the new terminal station at Krung Thep Aphiwat. I believe you have to ride on the same train unlike with motorcycles. If you are in Thailand you can call the hotline 1690 for further information. And please do let me know how you got on!

What are the rates to leave a car in the car park short and long term? I know there's space for over 1,600 vehicles but can't find anything on the prices.
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
I presume you didn't download my guide book yet for Krung Thep Aphiwat! They announced the fees just before I published it. However, at present it is still free. Once they start charging it will be 20 Baht per hour or 250 Baht for the day.

Don't know if you've seen this, but for the past couple of days I haven't been able to see the STR timetables, I guess they were updating them. It now seems there are no trains to Hua Hin from either the new station or Hua Lamphong, there are only a couple of trains each day and they go from Ramathibodi Hospital and Thonburi. Seems odd, I wonder if this will change?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Yes it's only seems to be in Thai which is what I was using to do the guide book. But I found some contradictions. The whole thing is a mess.
Anna Anna wrote on 31 January 2023
Thanks. I guess I've read a lot of horror stories about how bad the traffic is in Bangkok, especially early in the morning, I was worried about getting a taxi, but it sounds like that may be the easiest thing to do.
I take it from your reply that you wouldn't recommend going third class??
Thanks again
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
I always check the Google Maps app to see traffic conditions for my route and then plan accordingly.

As for going by 3rd Class, yes that is my prefeed choice if it is a scenic route as you can open the windows and it is easier to take photos. If you just want to get to your destination as comfortable as possible then consider 2nd Class with A/C.

Hi, thanks so much for this site, your Twitter feed and Facebook page, all so useful!
We will be in Thailand in August, we need to get the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin. It looks like we can either get the slower train from Hua Lamphong - this will be nearer our hotel, cheaper but slower and only 3rd class seats available, or the faster train from the new station - this will have 2nd class seats but further away from our hotel (and also an earlier start!)
I suppose I have two questions please - what is third class like and will it be ok for 5 hours? And how easy is it to get to the new station from the city centre (we will be staying at the western end of Silom Road)? Google maps says it will take ages, but I would have thought a combination of SkyTrain and metro should be quite quick?
Thank you so much
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
Thanks for your kind words. One of my next big jobs is to do destination guides detailing which trains to take and what there is to see on arrival. I think I probably should do Hua Hin first as several people have asked recently. No. 43 leaving KTW at 8:30am is the most popular one as it is 2nd Class and air-conditioned.

If you don't want to go by taxi, you can either take the Green Line north to BTS Mochit and switch here to MRT Chatuchak and take two stops to MRT Bang Sue which is in the basement of the terminal building. Alternative, get on the MRT near Silom and go all the way to MRT Bang Sue.

Hi Richard
As a senior citizen, am I entitled to discounted train travel, either on Bangkok metro trains, or long distance trains within Thailand?

Many thanks!
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
You are entitled to a discount on the MRT trains in Bangkok but not the BTS trains. I am pretty sure you cannot for long distance trains.

Thanks Richard for your advice and tips. As I'm not an early bird during holidays I might need to take a later train. And guess I would cross the river and have a look at the bigger market too. Most probably would also be taking either a taxi or minivan back to Bangkok as there are limited trains there. I've downloaded the guide for reference. Once again thanks for everything.
Alfred Chong Alfred Chong wrote on 15 December 2022
Thanks Richard for your reply. From your blogs and writeups it seems that there are two markets, the Manachai and Mae Klong ones. I supposed if one wants to just visit the Mahachai one without crossing the river for the limited trains it is still worthwhile? Lastly you mentioned you took a taxi home from across the river as it is relatively cheap, and the last train is 3.30pm. So if I'm staying in downtown Bangkok I could also just take a taxi or minivan?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
I cannot say for sure if you will be satisfied with just the smaller market. Maybe you can do that first and see if it is enough for you. From Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon there are buses to Bangkok. From Samut Sakhon you should find meter taxis to Bangkok.
Alfred Chong Alfred Chong wrote on 15 December 2022
Hi Richard

I was wondering are you familiar with the Maeklong Railway Market? If yes then which is the nearest train station to stop from Hua Lumphong? And which train will run directly through the market?
Admin Reply by: Richard Barrow
It is a separate line. The train station is Wongwian Yai (not to be confused with the nearby BTS skytrain station of the same name).

In the menu, choose 'Tourist Trains" and then select 'Market on the Tracks'. There is also a free PDF guide you can download about this market.
