Special Express No. 8 (Chiang Mai to Bangkok)

This is Special Express No. 8 day train that goes from Chiang Mai to Bangkok in ten hours and five minutes. It is an air-conditioned diesel multiple unit (DMU) built by Daewoo Heavy Industrial in South Korea in the 1990’s. Top speed is around 120km/hour. The train leaves Chiang Mai Railway Station at 8:50 a.m. and arrives at Bangkok (Krung Thep Aphiwat Station) at 6:55 p.m. Tickets cost 641 Baht which includes a meal. The best views are from the lefhandside between Lamphun and Uttaradit.

Popular destinations along the way include Phitsanulok (470 Baht), Lopburi (596 Baht) and Ayutthaya (616 Baht). Carriages are all 2nd Class and air-conditioned. The seats recline and have drop-down trays in the back of seats. There are also curtains to block out the sun. It is a comfortable ride but the carriages are starting to show their age. The Return journey is made by Special Express No. 7 train.
